Business Committee Elections

General Coucil Elections February 2021

There are vacancies for the Business Committee every year. Elections are held each February and are overseen by a representative of the Electoral Reform Society. At present, elections are by online voting with the option of a postal ballot on request. Online voting is being recommended with the expectation of encouraging members of the General Council to participate in the Elections.

Notice of forthcoming Elections, and the offices for which elections will be held in the following February, are published in advance in the winter issue of the Billet  along with candidate statements. This information will also be available on the General Council website with notices being sent out by email.

NOMINATION FORMS can be downloaded here. The closing date to receive nomination forms in the General Council office is 18 November 2020 for the February 2021 elections.

After the closing date of 18 November a list of nominees will be posted in this section of the website and can be viewed by clicking on the 'Election Status' tab underneath this page. 

Election Status

How to Vote

If you studied at the University after 2003 then you will be familiar with MyEd. The alumni version of MyEd is optimised for alumni and provides single secure location for all contact information and secure services including online voting.

  • If you used MyEd as a student you can use your existing username and password to login
  • If you already use the MyEd Alumni Portal then simply login as usual
  • If you have have registered for previous elections then you do not need to register again. Just login using the same username and password.

Once you are in MyEd you will find the Online Voting Channel and further instructions on how to cast your vote. Once you are in MyEd Alumni Portal you may not immediately see the Online Voting Channel where there are further instructions on how to cast your vote. If the voting channel is not obvious click on the 'Services' tab and it should appear there. You may also wish to use the 'Customise' tab to add the voting channel to your Home page for the Portal to ensure that it is always there in the future.  Login now.

New Users

If you are new to MyEd then you need to complete the EASE registration process.

EASE is just a fancy name for the 100% super secure system that the University uses for all of its online facilities. Think of it as a master key that fits every electronic door on campus.

We need to verify your identity because University governance is a serious business. Register now.

Requesting a Postal Vote

Members are strongly encouraged to vote online, but if a postal vote is required you may request one. If you wish to receive a postal vote and have not previously opted for one, please send your request to the General Council Office, Charles Stewart House, Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1HT, email: general.council@ed.ac.uk, to be received by midday 18 November 2020.

Chancellor Elections

The General Council is responsible for the election of the Chancellor of the University. The current Chancellor is Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal. Her Royal Highness was elected in March 2011, taking up post on 31 March 2011, and succeeded His Royal Highness Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh when he retired from the chancellorship held since 1953.

The current Chancellor, Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, took up post on 31 March 2011.

At present the chancellorship is held for life, therefore it is not anticipated that an election will be required for the foreseeable future.

How to Vote
