The next Statutory Half-Yearly Meeting will take place on Saturday 24 February 2018 in the new basement meeting facilities of the recently refurbished McEwan Hall, Teviot Place, Edinburgh. The incoming Principal, Professor Peter Mathieson will attend and give a presentation. If you have a question you would like to ask the Principal please email it to: GeneralCouncilQuestions@hotmail.co.uk, either beforehand or during the meeting, and the Principal will endeavour to answer as many as possible. Any that are not covered on the day will be answered by email afterwards.
The Meeting begins at 10.30 am and will be followed by a Reception at 12.30 pm in the Robing Room with the Lunch being held in the new facilities of the McEwan Hall. This is an excellent opportunity to view the recently installed Pathway to Enlightenment, a bold statement of the role of philanthropy here at the University, recognising the donors who contributed to the McEwan Hall's redevelopment. The design, conceived by students, incorporates images from the Collections that are relevant to the range of disciplines studied by the graduates who will walk these corridors in future - celebrating the range of studies undertaken here at the University.
The after-Lunch speaker will be Mr John James Chalmers, TV Presenter and Invictus Games medallist who had served in Afghanistan as a Royal Marine, subsequently sustaining devastating injuries as a result of a bomb blast in 2011. In September 2014, Chalmers was a medal winner in non-amputee cycling for Britain at the Invictus Games. He went on to present National Paralympic Day for Channel 4 as well as an online show for the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha. He was a presenter for Channel 4's award-winning coverage of the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as well as appearing as a guest on The Last Leg broadcast nightly live from a studio in Rio de Janeiro with the special series Live from Rio. He also featured on 'The Superhumans Show' and appeared on the BBC's coverage of 'Remembrance at the Cenotaph'. On 21st February 2017, Chalmers began presenting some of the sports segments on the BBC news channel in the afternoon.
His talk will no doubt be both impressive and inspiring. For those attending the Lunch there will also be a chance to view the beautifully refurbished auditorium with its spectacular ceiling.
